First host Shabbat

This past Shabbat we had our first host Shabbat. This meant that we were able to go to family and friends houses to experience a different 'type' of Shabbat. On Friday we had half a day of classes and were on our way to our host families. Our school ordered a group bus to Tel Aviv which I went on en route to Petach Tikvah, where our family friends the Selas live. Nir and Nili Sela picked me up from the Eretz Israel Museum where we got dropped off, and gave me a tour of Tel Aviv by car.  We then went to a bakery to pick up sweets for desert (boy is th stock empty on Shabbat)!!!!  We went to their apartment in Petach Tikvah where I had a nice greeting from their family who I hadn't seen in 3 years.  As a Canadian, it is a must to bring guests in Israel Roots clothing as a form of Canadian spirit!!  Below you'll see photos of the Selas sporting their new roots aparrel.

I was told that we were eating at 7:15 on Friday night for Shabbat dinner and the other guests were coming at 7:00 (when an Israeli says that they are eating at 7:15, they really mean that they are eating 2.5 hours later). So we ended up eating at 9:45.  It was a late night!  We had a great meal; we had schnitzel, spaghetti with meatballs and of course Israeli salad. I met all of their extended family as well. We stayed up pretty late playing Just Dance on the Wii, which was so much fun!  I thought I would have gotten more sleep this Shabbat then I actually did. I ended up only getting 6.5 hours of sleep total, while others on my program got about 13 to 18 hours of sleep.  It was amazing to see most things closed on Shabbat, although we managed to find an ice cream place to go to that was open.  We spent most of Shabbat playing board games, walking their dog Chakita in the beautiful 24 degree weather, and hanging out on their patio.  Before I went to Tel Aviv to go back to Jerusalem on the group bus we went to the Namal for dinner at Mikes Place and went for dessert to Max Brenners for chocolate in a syringe (a very common Israeli form of eating chocolate).
